Job Title: Sr. Linux Administrator
Location: Pasadena, CA

Description:

My client is seeking 2 Linux System Administrators who will be responsible for the management of software and hardware infrastructure in a high volume environment. You must be very organized and able to build and manage a high-volume production operations environment at two or more bi-costal data centers. This position requires flexibility and willingness to be on call and available 24 hours a day, including weekends, on a rotating schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage Intel hardware and Linux operating system across a multi-rack site
  • Manage web Apache, Tomcat and Java EE applications in a very high-volume environment
  • Have first-line responsibility for isolating application-level configuration, performance and database problems
  • Manage mail servers for a high-volume mail farm
  • Set up standard operating procedures including how software is deployed, change management practices are implemented, and performance tuning is performed, etc.
  • Setup system monitoring and performance monitoring frameworks
  • Setup and maintain alert and security policies
  • Work closely with Senior Network Operations Engineers and the Database Administration team
  • Partner closely with the Engineering team to assist them in isolating and debugging code-related problems

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-7+ years of IT/Internet industry
  • Extensive UNIX/Linux Systems Administration experience
  • Strong Java EE application server experience (WebLogic, JBoss)
  • Strong Apache and Tomcat experience
  • Some Windows experience
  • Mail administration for high-volume production mail farms desirable

Raytheon has an immediate need for an Informix Database Administrator (DBA) for various Informix instances. Responsibilities include:
  • Installing and upgrading DBMS Servers. utilities, and application tools.
  • Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for the database system.
  • Managing primary database structures (tablespaces)
  • Managing primary objects (table, views, indexes)
  • Enrolling users and maintaining system security.
  • Ensuring compliance with DBMS vendor license agreements
  • Controlling and monitoring user access to the database.
  • Monitoring and optimizing the performance of the database.
  • Planning for backup and recovery of database information.
  • Maintain archived data on tape/recovery media
  • Backing up and restoring the database.
  • Contacting DBMS vendor for technical support.
  • Coding in system commands and shell scripts
  • This database administrator (DBA) is responsible for the environmental aspects or “itilities” of a database.
  • Recoverability - Creating and testing Backups
  • Maintainability - Verifying proper deployment and operation
  • Integrity - Verifying or helping to verify data integrity
  • Security - Defining and/or implementing access controls to the data
  • Availability - Ensuring maximum uptime
  • Performance - Ensuring maximum performance

Eric Hammond will be leading an Amazon EC2 Beginners Workshop. EC2 is Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud which provides virtual Linux computers rented by the hour. http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/

This workshop will provide a brief overview/intro to EC2 followed by a step-by-step walkthrough to creating an Amazon EC2 account and starting your first EC2 instance (server) running Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or CentOS (others may also be available).

Bring a laptop and a credit card with the ability to charge up to $0.25 in EC2 service fees.
